Glad to see this thread back to the top as I wanted to share my cocktail drum kit I just got. I picked this kit up a few weeks ago. Got it for a great deal on craigslist. I mainly just wanted the main 15"x25" drum. I'm gonna use the 8" snare and 10" tom for my 3 year old nephews drum kit I'm makin' him.
I took the kit to a local drum guy (Billy Baker) and had him wrap it in ruby red diamond pearl. It looks awesome. Also put all new lugs on the main drum since the older ones was in bad shape. All the other chrome hardware cleaned up nice. I ended up gettin' a Pearl 10" firecracker snare that sounds really good for such a small snare. Has a nice crack to it. Still want to get new cymbals but what I have right now will do for a little while.
The kit looks really good. It actually has a nice sound to it also. Not a huge thump for bass, but it works. Hopin' to put together a little 3 piece rockabilly band and use this kit. Havin' a blast playin', but now my shin and calf is sore from the stand up playin'. Hopefully it's just somethin' I will get used to.

Got me a new toy today! Picked up a Holbein 50/2 upright bass. I sold the cocktail drum kit. Still have my electronic drum kit I play on. I just wanted to go in another direction and have always had a interest in the upright. Here's a couple pics...

Well, I have one bass guitar -- a Gibson issued Tobias Killer B 5 string. It's a very odd li'l sucker. I have a love/hate relationship with it. I grew up playing vintage Fenders. I sold off my 64 P with a shaved 61 neck for squat to buy the Tobias for $800. It had that P bass "growl" similar to Max Bennett's wall shaking sound on such songs as "Street Life." But the neck is flat! Not curved like Fender necks! I use Will Lee gauge Dean Markley SR2000 strings which seem to wear out too quickly. With the P bass, I used strictly LaBella heavy gauge flat wound nickel wrapped, turned all the bass on the amp OFF, the treble and volume all the way UP and I could shake any way clearly with all the punch and growl there is to be had. The Tobias comes close, but it doesn't have any "thunk." The top end sounds ... too high tech for this low tech bassist. But it still approximates the P bass and the B string is nice to have.
One thing is I cannot find too much information about the Tobias. It has a high gloss cheap polyurethane finish and the bridge wasn't placed all that accurately. It is extremely well in tune but string height ... I fight with it constantly. The P bass always had a consistent feel to it. Strong. Some days the Tobias feels strong, other days like I'm playing with rubber bands. I always play the bass as funky like Bob or Bennett or Jemmott no matter the material, but the Tobias does afford me some McCartney-ish slides and such the P bass didn't. Cool. But the Tobias isn't all that funky like an old P bass. For a Tobias, it's probably the funkiest one they ever produced. It's quirky and I like that. But it's not funky because it's basically a high tech instrument. I have to play it through a 35 year old low tech amp to get that old P bass sound. Something gets lost in the translation. But regardless, what audiences still respond to is the funk. I can make the Tobias funky sounding enough but it is not like an old Fender. How I wish I had the dough to get me a 61 P bass with that extra fat neck and that dark, dark fretboard and those old pickups which had all the sound, slap on some LaBella flats, and play SCORPIO!

Well had a few changes. I just couldn't get used to the upright bass so I sold it. I love drumming. I love to stand and play as well. Main reason for my love for cocktail drums. But I really dig the style of Slim Jim Phantom (Stray Cats drummer). So I took my old Pearl rhythm traveler bass (20"x8") and snare (13"x5") and had those wrapped in gold glass glitter and gonna make this my new "stand up" kit. Just gotta add a few cymbals and then hopefully I can get with some players and do some country/rockabilly stuff.

Here's my CIJ Fender '62 RI, pimped-up with covers.
Swapped out the stock pickup for a very nice sounding Seymour Duncan SPB-1 'Vintage', changed the tone cap for a PIO one. Strung with nice old 49-109 La Bellas, with bit of foam under the bridge.
Cheers

Nice bass Nick!
I sold my old SX "Funk Machine" wannabe and I just ordered me a new bass. A squier Classic Vibe 50s tele style. Butterscotch blonde finish. I know it's a Squier, but these classic vibe series are really nice for the money. I had the lake placid blue one awhile back but didnt care for the color. I love the blonde though and the neck is tinted for that vintage vibe. Will be here Monday....CAN'T WAIT!
Still waitin' on The Babbitt signature bass!!!

NEW BASS DAY!!!
My Squier Classic Vibe 50s came in today and I love it. The blonde finish looks awesome and it sounds great too. I changed out the high mass stock bridge for a fender vintage style bridge. Just for the vintage look and the bridge cover fits over the smaller bridge better. Gonna take her to the local bass shop to get strung up with some flatwound strings and a proper setup.

I have a few instruments here at home. I'll post pictures of them later. Most of them are hand me downs from my father when he was playing out up until 1992. Your stuff looks really great though.

Heres a snap shot of my bass I'm currently using.
This is a mid 80s Model Peavey Foundation S Four String. It was originally my fathers. He hadn't touched it since 1992. I picked it up around 2006-07. I did a few modifications to it.

Back when I posted those photos for him of his basses/guitars, we chatted about a custom bass for me. I just didn't have the funds for a custom bass. I wish I would have got one. Even though I never met him, just the chats on here and facebook, he seemed like a really cool guy. And readin' the posts on his facebook wall and soulful detroit, he's gonna be missed by many.

I just bought a Squier Precision a while back for a new bass. Will post pictures of it soon. Installed the Pick up and Bridge covers for it as well. (Love the sound it produces.)
